Great Idea- Lazy Acres Sandspit Picnic

posted Jul 28, 2010 2:27 PM by max cougar Oswald

This is a great idea for a sunny oceanside picnic in the Mesa/downtown/beachfront area of Santa Barbara. Head to Lazy Acres market on the mesa - they have a huge selection of healthy, organic, vegetarian/vegan, and worldly food that is ready to eat. Pick up a few to-go plates from the hot food station or the salad bar, and a nice bottle of cold white wine. I also highly recommend the Raw Vegan Cheesecake, which they sell by the slice in a variety of flavors. It is ridiculously delicious and it's made entirely of raw nuts and fruit (I have no idea how they do it). After you've picked out your picnic supplies, throw them in a canvas tote and walk down Shoreline Drive to the harbor (its about 2 miles - it also makes a great bike ride) and walk out onto the Breakwater. You can sit up on the platform handrail and enjoy your meal and wine in front of the best oceanside view in the city. It is amazing at sunset.

Saigon- Awesome Vegetarian Vietnamese

Saigon recently created an entirely separate vegetarian menu in all three of their locations. They now offer all the same dishes as the regular menu, but with tofu-meat. It's pretty surreal. Tofu pork, tofu chicken, tofu shrimp, and tofu beef... The taste and even the texture is amazingly close to the real thing. Bravo!

Reinventing the Pizza Restaurant

Pizza Guru, a new pizza restaurant on upper state street, its my new favorite spot. They have ENDLESS options for you pizza, with three types of dough (one is even gluten free, made from rice flour), and a multitude of cheeses, vegetables, spices, sauces, and meats. I've been there four times and I haven't even made a dent in the menu. The coolest thing though is that EVERYTHING on their menu is made with entirely local ingredients. Even the meat is from Santa Barbara County free-range grass fed cows, and last but not least, they offer a local, organic, wheat-free BEER! Not that I usually bring my computer to eat pizza, but they also have free wi-fi. This place is awesome.
